Think everyone, before changing the UI

User interface is one of the important phase of an application, where the user and the application interact with each other. Design of the User interface is very important for any application, as it will be the main for the user to access the application.

Although there are certain criteria in designing the User Interface, we cannot design 100% flawless UI. Every UI will have a defect and it cannot be avoided. When the flaw in UI gets highlighted, developers will try to fix the flaw by changing the UI.

But most of the time, UI is being changed without any proper reason. Continuous change of WhatsApp UI is the best example. For checking whether the message has been read or not, WhatsApp had included color(blue) change along with the double tip. Few old age people should have felt hard in recognizing the blue ticket and reported to the team, hence “i” icon was included in the UI. Old age people felt better on this feature.

But what happened with the current WhatsApp update is, “i” icon has been moved and info option has been included in the right corner of the application. I am seriously wondering on why this UI change has been incorporated.

My father, who is 60+ years is facing the above mentioned problem while using the WhatsApp. I have taught him on how to check whether the person has seen the message or not. Since he is not able to identify the change of blue tick, he was using the “i" icon. Because of the recent update, initially he was unable to find the icon on the UI. After a small conversation with me, he is now able to understand the change in UI. Earlier he felt very easy to check that but now he is feeling difficult to use that option.

What one can understand from the above problem is,

“We should remember everyone, before changing the UI”.
